We have, except for a very small set of specialty bulbs (working on that!), gone all LED in out home.
I had tried them out over time and found them very expensive, too yellow, too blue - not ready for prime time. then, this past winter, old Russ Killian tipped me off - the time had come. PECO, our local electric company, was subsidizing the cost of the bulbs, and they had reached a beautiful, bright white.
I bought a few, and loved them. Nine watts for a "60 watt replacememnt" They barely warm up, remember being scorched by the incandescents?
These bulbs are built to last 25,000 hours, and the savings in kWh, even over the prior generation of compact flourescent bulbs, is significant - this is a win-win.
Businesses are going LED, and not just to be good citizens - their savings over time are significant. See this from the NY Times, New York Hotels Make a Green Pledge for a case study, and the details.
Here is a handy LED Savings Calculator.
I calculate our savigs will be over $ 850 a year - year after year.
Earth friendly too
